PFC exercise: No smartphone

Try to go for a day – or if you can’t face that, half a day – without your smartphone, or at least without Whatsapp, Snapchat, Facebook and so on. So, only use your phone as a telephone and see how this affects your attention and focus.

When you take away social media and other short-term distractions, it gets easier to focus your attention for a sustained period, a skill associated with your prefrontal cortex. Once you get used to this change, you’ll notice that you get calmer, your focus and memory improve, and you gain greater self-control.

This is a very powerful exercise, so try to not reject it outright because you feel resistance or don’t want to be pushed out of your comfort zone. It may help to refer back to the ‘Out of your comfort zone’ exercise at the end of Chapter 2 (p. 45). See what you filled in there and check whether you are experiencing these feelings now too.
